Referee Clinics

Interested in becoming a nationally-rated referee? Want to get paid to referee at local tournaments? NACs? World Cups?

Capitol Division and Virginia Division have joined forces to host a pair of refereeing clinics on September 29-30 and October 27-28. Each clinic will be held at ISF in Tysons Corner, VA on the first day and at DCFC on the second day. Participants need to attend both days of the selected clinic.

The September 29-30 clinic will focus on refereeing skills for saber. The instructor will be George Kolombatovich. George is the Director of Fencing at Columbia University and is a member of the FIE Commission de l'Arbitrage, which is responsible for the testing, rating, and assigning of all international referees and selects and assigns referees at the World Championships and Olympic Games.

The October 27-28 clinic will focus on foil and épée. The instructor will be Jon Moss. Jon is a member of the USFA Fencing Officials Commission. Jon's 15-year-old son Zach is the youngest nationally-rated foil and épée referee in the USFA.

The clinic will include general information on the role of the referee, detailed information on right-of-way, weapon-specific details, and will also include a discussion on how to referee wheelchair fencing.

Pre-registration is required (first-come, first-served), and the cost of the clinic $50 per person per seminar. Capitol Division will refund $25 of the cost to its members who attend both days of a seminar. The registration form is available on this website (PDF format).

All participants must read the US Fencing rule book before attending either of these seminars. The rule book and referee study guide are available on the US Fencing website at http://www.USFencing.org/forms.
