Chevy Chase Fencing Club

The Chevy Chase Fencing Club is continuing to meet at the Palisades Recreation Center during the renovation of the Chevy Chase Community Center. There is space for four fencing strips in this temporary location and we have secure storage for our scoring machines and equipment. The club will continue to meet four times a week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fencing Master Ray Finkleman reports that he anticipates that the club will be returning to the Chevy Chase Community Center with a new, no-leak roof, new heating/air conditioning, elevator, sparkling new bathrooms, and better lighting soon.

To get to the Palisades Recreation Center take MacArthur Blvd. to Dana Place (Listrani's Italian Restaurant is on the corner). Go west one block to Sherier Place and turn right. The driveway to Palisades Recreation Center is about 1/4 mile on the left.

New members and visitors are welcome. There is a $5.00 floor fee for guests and a full uniform is required. Beginning and intermediate foil classes for adults and group epee classes for 8 to 12 year olds will be offered again starting the first week of October. Equipment is provided for all classes. Registration is available at the club's web site, www.fencer.com.

Contact Raymond Finkleman, Fencing Master, for more information at (301) 774-7777 or by email at fencer@fencer.com.

Forest Glen Fencing Center

The Forest Glen Fencing Center is the home of the DC Fencers Club, and is located at 9330 Fraser Avenue, in Silver Spring. Directions to the club are found elsewhere in this newsletter. DC Fencers Club is one of the largest and most competitive clubs in the country, with about 100 members. Club members have won many medals both locally and nationally. Instruction to both beginners and experienced fencers is offered by three certified fencing masters, and there is a strong emphasis on junior and beginner classes as well.

Club hours are Monday through Friday, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Group footwork is held every Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Foil nights are Monday and Wednesday, and epee nights are Tuesday and Thursday, but if you come on an "off" night you will generally find someone to fence your weapon. Friday nights, priority is given to competitive fencers.

Classes meet twice a week, Monday and Wednesday on regular school days from 4:00 - 4:50 p.m. Nick Jamilla, participant in the 1987 World Fencing Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, instructs electric foil and epee to a club of six to ten students.

NIH Fencing Club

The NIH (National Institutes of Health ) Fencing Club meets on Tuesdays from 7:30-10 pm and Thursdays from 8-10 p.m. on the 14th floor of Building 10. Parking is free. Visitors should call Larry Pinkus at (301) 435-1214 (his work number) since sometimes on Thursdays the club does not meet.

The head coach at NIH is David Ling, former assistant fencing coach at Penn State. Dave gives individual lessons on Tuesdays. Larry gives individual lessons and coach a group class a few times a year for beginners and advanced beginners. The next class begins on October 12th, and runs through November 23. Cost is $65 for six one-hour lessons including use of equipment and a six-month membership in the club. The NIH Club has excellent space with a wooden floor on Tuesdays and a gym with composite floor on Thursdays. They fence electrically and dry. Foil is usually electric. The club welcomes other club members, and there is no floor fee. Last year Johns Hopkins fencers visited and there was an informal team match in sabre. Larry warns that NIH has no epee fencers, although they would like to. He notes that the club has plenty of space and no one has to wait to fence at our club. Dues are $50 per year.
